Family of Jacob^6 Van Wicklin
Jacob^6 Van Wicklen (John^5, Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1
Jeppes), b. 1804, Dutchess, NY
Married: Mary _______, before 1838
Children:
1. Jacob^7 Van Wicklin, b. 13 June 1830, d. 3 June 1912, Sparta, Elgin,
Ont. CAN (see Jacob Van Weakley in 1851 Census
below)
2. Sarah^7 Van Wicklin, b. 24 August 1839, Elgin County, Ont, CAN
(Jacob^6 and Mary may have
had another son, Thomas based on the following marriage registration information.
R#8501 Alice Amelia Van Wicklen,
22, of Colbourne (b. Lakeport), d/o Thomas and Mary (Hewitt) Van Wicklin married
on 22 April 1891 in Cramahe to William Murrell, 22, of Windham (b. Windham) s/o
Alexander and Elizabeth Murrell. Jacob^7
married a Hewitt as well making it a possibility that Thomas is a brother of
Jacob^7 and that both married Hewitt sisters.)
Parents:
Jacob's parents are Jan (John) and Christina
(Traver) Van Wicklen
Mary's parents are ____________.
This sign was found in front of the Sparta South Cemetery in Sparta,
Malahide, Elgin, Ontario, CAN. The cemetery contains the gravestones of Jacob Van Wicklin and Lucy Van Wicklin, according to the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid. I was not able to locate
the markers on 1 August 2001 when this photo was taken; however, I am in the process of obtaining more
information from Elgin County on Jacob and Lucy. Quite likely, the Jacob buried here is either Jacob^6 or Jacob^7 and the Lucy might be a first wife of
Jacob^7 or second wife of Jacob^6. ---jvanwicklin
Update based on 6 August
2002 email from Georgi Sills providing data on Jacob and Lucie Van Wicklin from
the 1901 census (Elgin District, Yarmouth, #68, pg. 11) Jacob is listed as the
head of household, b. 13 June 1830, age 71 and Lucie is his wife, b. 12 Jan
1831, age 70.
Background information:
Jacob^6 Van Wicklin (John^5, Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes) was b. 1804 in Dutchess County, NY and m. Mary
_____ before 1838. Mary was b. 1802. Jacob served in the Northumberland County Militia in 1828.
1861 Ontario Census lists Jacob Van Wickin living in St. Thomas, 60 yr. old,
married, b. in U.S., an Episcopalian Methodist. His occupation is
"fuller."1871 Ontario Census lists
Jacob^7 (age 40), Mary^6 Van Wicklin (age 71) and an Elizabeth Van Wicklin (age 66) residing in Malahide Township, Elgin,
Ontario, Canada. (Most likely the census identifies Jacob^7 and his mother, Mary. Isaac's
daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1796) is too old to be the 66 year-old Elizabeth referred to in this census, so this Elizabeth remains unidentified.
(Several of John^5's and Isaac^5's children appeared to have changed their surname name to Van Wicklin, especially those who migrated to Canada.)
(See source section below for death registrations for Jacob and Lucy and for marriage dates for a Jacob VW and a Mary VW. It is quite possible that this information will tie in later with this branch of the family.)
